What Does a County Legislator Do?
A county legislator is a local elected official who helps make decisions about how county government operates. In Dutchess County, that means representing the communities of Pawling and Dover on countywide issues — not running town government directly, but being the voice of Dover & Pawling in every county decision.
- Votes on the county budget and how taxpayer money is spent
- Passes local laws and resolutions at the county level
- Helps decide funding for roads, public safety, health services, parks, senior services, and other county programs
- Reviews contracts, major projects, and department spending
- Represents the concerns and needs of the people in their district
- Works with other legislators and county officials to address local problems and plan for the future
